Company Value: Simplicity

“I am sorry I did not take the time to send you a shorter mail.” I love this sentence.

Simplicity is an art. It is one of our 4 core values at Contraload and probably the hardest one to always keep in the back of our minds. Why is it so difficult to summarise what you want to convey? How come that creating an understandable concise overview or project document, is such a challenging task?

Two main reasons:

  • The perceived ‘need for speed’ is getting in the way of our focus to think a bit longer about well-structured mails and project documents. “Real time” is the new standard of communication and we get tricked into providing quantity over quality.
  • Simplicity is complex! Simple solutions require the most advanced thinking and that is exactly what we naturally tend to avoid since it often comes along dressed as ‘extra work’ and an extra mile to go.

My advice to you is to put some more focus on simplicity.

In every meeting we have, or for every task we perform, we should always ask ourselves the question if we have made things more straightforward or more complex and if so, why?  Can we do better?  If you apply this extra focus, you will find out that it is never simple to keep things simple, but worth the time and effort.

Simplicity is a habit.

Why is this so important?

Keep in mind that the easier something is to understand and use – the more likely it is to be adopted. It is worth taking the time for an extra review before sending it out as it will save a multiple of this review time for others receiving the message. Become a master of simple communication and your team, colleagues and family will respect and love your for it!

Keeping things simple is a skill and an underappreciated form of creativity.
